Some bands sound big, Nothing But Thieves (UK) sound limitless. Over the course of more than a decade, the band has established itself as one of the biggest names in British alternative rock, releasing five studio albums, racking up billions of streams, topping the UK Albums Chart and selling out arenas around the world.
Impressive as those achievements and numbers may be, the true scale of Nothing But Thieves’ music is best experienced live. Towering walls of guitars, heart-wrenching melodies and frontman Conor Mason’s almost impossibly versatile voice can take an audience from delicate vulnerability to full-throttle intensity in the blink of an eye. The band themselves have said that their fifth album Stray Dogs, released in September, was made for the stage. And it perfectly captures what Nothing But Thieves are all about: this is music that simply can’t be contained within a pair of headphones.
Next summer marks exactly ten years since Nothing But Thieves last played Ilosaarirock. If you were in the crowd at Laulurinne back in 2017, you already know the drill: it’s better to be there than to hear afterwards about the spectacle you missed.
