I’m late for my appointment with Relentless, a local up-and-comer band. As I finally make my way to the Rekka Stage I’m a bit confused: how am I suddenly in Hawaii? In addition to the energized musicians, the stage is peopled by a lifeguard with binoculars, a half-naked dude with a surf board and a couple of enticing hula babes (alas, the last ones only in the form of cardboard cutouts). The fun doesn’t stop there: there’s also a fully-fledged tiki bar that serves drinks to the lucky folk in the front row! The bass booms within your rib cage and the high tempo forces your groove on. How sincerely joyous!
The band members complement each other well and the mix is just right. The upbeat tunes follow each other in quick succession and soon the crowd comes together to form a dance circle. Elsewhere in the audience palm meets palm and even the calmer participants can’t help but bob their heads. Even when the band plays a slower number from their new album the gig retains its energy. When it’s all played and done, the audience thanks the guys with the roaring applause that they undoubtedly deserve.
This is one of the best things about Ilosaarirock: you get to surprise yourself with awesome bands you’ve never heard anything about. Relentless shot a most welcome jolt of energy and good humor into this Saturday afternoon.
