Energetic jam session with Rival Sons

Rival Sons was probably one of the most expected bands this year in Ilosaarirock, and one doesn’t need to look too far for the reason. The second album Pressure & Time has been lauded in media since it’s release, and the fires of expectations have been further fueled by the band’s reportedly energetic and intense live performances.

From my perspective, I’d go as far as say that the expectations were more than fulfilled. Vibrant blues rock played by talented musicians and delivered by a vocalist whose stage presence and charisma would earn a nod from The Lizard King. Sign me up.

The familiar songs from Pressure & Time where not the only offerings Rival Sons brought to Ilosaarirock. Slices from the earlier album and even one fresh taster, Keep On Swinging, from the upcoming Head Down album was heard on YleX Stage this evening.

The seemingly impromptu jamming and somewhat slower bluesy bits did interfere a bit with the intensity. Face of Light even inspired some in the audience to sport lighters in the air. Still, what was lost in energy was compensated with showmanship and individual talent.
