Expanding one’s mind with the Prophets
That unimitable reggae feeling on a Saturday afternoon at the Rentolava is the greatest thing. Girls with flowers on their dresses and dreadlocks on their head groove to the music of Profeetta ja Uusi Maailmankatsomus (The Prophet and the New World Religion) They’ve taken over the spot that Puppa J. ja Tasoittavat was supposed to be playing but had to cancel because of going into labour (!). No matter, for the New Profets’ sonic cocktail was most interesting.
The vocalist has a poets soul, at least if one were to base the judgement on his inter-song announcements, not to mention the lyrics. “Reality is an illusion / caused by the lack of extacy”, “The self of the human kind has issues”, “I must reach psychosis, I can’t stop halfway”, “In the outer archipelago of the inner space we run aground”, “The bloodied moon runs in circles” were the kind of mind-expanding materials spewn from the stage. Me likes.
Their musical ingredients came, among other things, from Finnish hymns, video games, national melancholy (trad.), and Jamaican reggae. The lyrics ranged from Biblical stories to chemical adventures, not forgetting the spreading of their new world religion.
