THE CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA (UK)
The media, who loves labels and precise genre definitions, may find it difficult to put British The Cinematic Orchestra in any of their narrow boxes. This music could be acid jazz, ambient, or a soundtrack for a film that was never made.
The band's debut album Motion (1999) was instantly well received among listeners and thrilled music critics. The next release, Everyday (2002) contained such elegantly sublime nu-jazz that one can without hesitation put it in one's thesaurus as a perfect synonym for the word cool. But The Cinematic Orchestra's next project was the even more exciting Man with a Movie Camera. This was a commission work to accompany a Russian silent film with the same name, first performed in the opening event to celebrate the Portuguese city of Porto's year as the European Capital of Culture in 2001, and released as an album and DVD in 2003. This year's May finally ends the long wait and gives us new material in the shape of the album Ma Fleur.
Even in between the album releases, The Cinematic Orchestra has not only basked in the praise of the listening audience, but also made a lot of gigs. The band has wanted to find new listeners both in the huge Fuji Rock festival in Japan and in the legendary jazz event in Montreux. Ilosaarirock wishes to express their sincere thanks to the band and believes that they will find plenty of new friends at the summery Laulurinne.
