RUBIK

Although the music of the Helsinki-based indie miracle Rubik may not demand quite so much mental effort as the multicoloured puzzle cube of the Eighties, it does tickle your intellect nonetheless. After the critics went nuts with the band's debut EP People Go Missing (2005), Rubik got up steam and released the follower Bad Conscience Patrol earlier this year.

In Rubik's songs, the conditions are varied like the Finnish summer weather. From twangy guitar rock it travels in an instant all the way to smooth, almost space-like pop, sprinkling nuances like confetti with a lavish hand. And yet there's never any doubt that the band would not know exactly where it is going.

The Finnish rock bible Rumba already pondered in their Rubik cover story whether the quintet will eventually grow larger than Radiohead. Although it's easy to believe that for this band almost anything is possible, at the moment we're perfectly satisfied with the fact that Rubik is a great band with music that moves both your body and your brain.
