PORCUPINE TREE (UK)
It would be very easy to define Porcupine Tree's music simply as "progressive rock" – let us not forget that, after all, "progressive" should in this context refer to such things as avant-garde, evolution, and unconventionality. As a matter of fact, it is extremely difficult to force Porcupine Tree in any single category. Essential elements in this music are rapid mood swings where screeching, metallic guitars can in an instant melt into hazy melancholy. Listening to Porcupine Tree feels strangely light and easy, though. This must be because the music seems to come straight from the very souls of its makers.
Porcupine Tree, the brainchild of the band's vocalist-guitarist Steven Wilson, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Those familiar with the adventurous and constantly evolving nature of this British band know that there will be no bland gala evenings or "Most Loved Songs" collections coming up. On the contrary, the highlights of this great year will be the new album Fear of a Blank Planet, and of course the band's first ever Finnish performance at Ilosaarirock!
