DAMN SEAGULLS
Some might say that it's better to be big than grown-up, but Damn Seagulls combines the best of both worlds: they are both massive and mature. The members are astonishingly fresh in the face when you think that they have played together for ten years now. The past decade has hardly left its mark in the appearances of these young Helsinki-based gentlemen, but it can be heard in their relaxed, confident manner of handling their instruments, something that makes all the comparisons with E Street Band seem plausible and true.
At the beginning of their career this flock claimed their music to be "adult punk rock", but since those days their expression has developed into soulful and rootsy rock'n'roll. Their brand new album Soul Politics also catches a bit of that inexplicable Eighties magic – the same that makes Don Henley's Boys of Summer such an unashamedly fantastic song, after all these years.
When playing live, they are very impressive to look at, with organs, brass instruments and all. Their zealous attitude both on and offstage has gained them a lot of publicity, but the most important thing of all is that for Damn Seagulls, playing together is like a big party every time. Like their guitarist/vocalist Lauri Eloranta says: "When we're onstage, the aim is to celebrate like there's no tomorrow, and we want to kick the audience's ass, but always try to keep the thing from getting all chaotic." Say no more, Mr. Eloranta.
