KELPO POJAT

Kelpo pojat is, to be precise, a Helsinki-based band, but its fate is entwined with Joensuu in numerous ways. The band's members have been playing with Kumikameli, people from Joensuu have been playing with Kelpo pojat, and a legend has it that one of the band's side projects had its beginning on a pub crawl in Joensuu town centre.

It's been a while since Kelpo pojat released any new material, but their three outstanding albums (Taivas vuotaa, lätäköt laulaa, 1990, Yö uinuu, tuuli hyräilee, 1991 and Krääsää, 1994) still don't sound a bit outdated. The music is pop rock at its most honest: tear-jerking melodies played almost exclusively with acoustic instruments. It is also worth mentioning that the man responsible for the band's lyrics, Tomi Kontio, has since the mid-nineties become a very well known and acclaimed poet.

These days Kelpo pojat's live performances are rare occasions, but nonetheless worth waiting for. The band hasn't been seen in Ilosaarirock for ten years, but the word has it that this time the men might even bring new songs with them.
